Biome Research Guide
This material was passed out and presented by Ms. Borland on our first day of library research. BIOME RESEARCH GUIDE Focus on these resources to acquire the information you need for your project. Make sure that you write down all necessary information to properly cite your sources. Use Citation Machine to create your MLA citations for those that aren’t provided by the resource. To access Britannica Online, NetTrekker, and Citation Machine from home go to http://library.garlandisd.net. Choose Austin Academy. From the Austin library home page, click on the desired link. Username = austinacad. Password = ktwelve To access Gale ebooks, go to http://library.garlandisd.net. Choose Naaman Forest High School. Follow the directions below. Books: Check all of the books on the research carts that apply to your biome. Use the Table of Contents and Index to help locate specific types of information. Information needed to cite a book: (Use front and back of title page in book to find this information) Title of book, author or editor, publishing company, publishing city, copyright or publishing date. Encyclopedias: (World Book, etc.) Information needed to cite an encyclopedia: Author of the article you used, title of the article, name of the encyclopedia, edition of the encyclopedia if given, copyright date. EBooks (GALE) Go to http://library.garlandisd.net. Choose Naaman Forest High School. From the Naaman library home page, click on Gale. The entry password is ktwelve. Go to the Student Resource Center. Type in your search term. Information needed to cite ebooks from Gale: Gale creates the citation for you. From the article you are using, find the tab at the top that says “Source Citation” and click on it. Then find where it says “source citation” on the page. Copy and paste the citation. Online Encyclopedia: (Britannica Online) 1. Search High School. Check several of the links provided. Information needed to cite from Britannica: Scroll to the bottom of the page you are using. Copy and paste the MLA citation provided. 2. Click on “Web’s Best” from an article you are using. This will take you to a few, VERY GOOD websites recommended by Britannica. You will have to create your own citations with Citation Machine for these websites. NetTrekker: Search the High School version. Information needed to cite a website using Citation Machine: Title of web page, title of web site, author’s name if given, publishing or revision date, sponsoring organization if given, date you accessed the site, URL (not optional for you!).
