ACADEMICS:
Students Obtaining Academic Responsibility (S.O.A.R.) is a sixth grade program giving students "tools" to help make that transition into middle school. SOS Passes- Four per six weeks/located in assignment spiral. These passes allow students to go to lockers to retrieve assignments, obtain needed materials, etc. outside the 5-minute passing period without a penalty. Tutorials- A wonderful place to get extra help when needed in an academic area, make up work from an absence, get help on organization, etc. Tutorials are never looked upon as punishment, but rather, a smaller, less intimidating place perhaps to receive that extra help. Sixth grade tutorials are listed in your child's classrooms, assignment spiral, the Austin Academy website, and below:
Austin Academy Sixth Grade Tutorials ZAP (Zeros Aren't Permitted)- This intervention program stresses early parent notification and involvement when work is not received on time. ZAP allows parent notification the day work is not given to a teacher. Should an assignment not be submitted when due, the student will: fill out a ZAP form, take home the parent copy, return the next school with the signed form and completed assignment.
SUPPLIES: The supply list for the 2010-2011 school year was put together with every sixth grade teacher's input. Basic materials such as paper, pencil, pen, correct folder, etc. come to every class meeting with the student. If supplies are exhausted, lost, misplaced, etc., the student is expected to take care of the materials as soon as possible, and come to class prepared. A teacher may have the best lesson in the world, but it is wasted if a student does not come prepared to learn. A student must come to class with a positive attitude and necessary materials in order to be in a position to become successful. We would appreciate your help in checking with your child on a regular basis regarding the status of his/her supplies. A copy of the supply list is available in the assignment spiral. Many times a child is afraid to inform you that they have lost a ruler, pens, etc. Please review the supplies on a consistent basis (you might want to just make it a habit to ask weekly if any supplies need to be purchased). We recommend that you help your child place their name on all supplies before bringing them to school. Names on folders, spirals, pencil bags, etc. help us return those materials in a timely manner back to the student.
