Tools for Success:SOARing to New Heights in Sixth Grade
Students Obtaining Academic Success

Sixth grade by any measurement tool will be a year of transition and adjustment. Middle school offers students an opportunity to manage their time between academics, after school activities, sports, etc. We believe in giving students in sixth grade the tools with which to be successful and to take ownership of their academic responsibilities. These tools are discussed below:

Assignment Spirals:
THE most important tool for sixth graders is the assignment spiral. Each teacher places assignments in a prominent location in his/her classroom. Upon entering the classroom, students are reminded to record the assignment accurately, including any listed due dates. The spirals used in our sixth grade at Austin Academy are customized for our use. Each and every student in sixth grade is to record the assignments daily in each class attended. Students are also asked to refrain from writing no homework, blocked, or absent. Every square should be used.

Tutorials:
Tutorials are an excellent way to get caught up in a class, get more of an explanation of a topic covered in class, review for a test or quiz, etc. Tutorials should never be looked upon as punishment, but rather as an opportunity for more "one on one" work with the instructor, in a much smaller setting.  Tutorials are listed in your assignment spirals.

SOS Passes:
Each student is given four (4) SOS passes to use for each of the six week grading periods. These are in the assignment spiral and the teacher will sign the pass when used. These may be used to access the restroom, locker, etc. during class time. Again, these are used at the student's discretion. Students should manage their time between classes and keep binders/lockers organized in order to avoid the unnecessary use an SOS pass.

The homework just did not get turned in.....what now?
In 6th grade, we have an intervention program for students called ZAP--Zeroes Are not Permitted.

ZAP GUIDELINES

The purpose of ZAP is to assist students in getting the highest possible grade on an assignment that has not been completed correctly or legibly or is not in the student’s possession on the date that it is due.  Students will be shown how to fill out a ZAP form during the first week of school and will be required to keep this sheet in their geography folders for reference throughout the year.

1.     Teachers may require a student to fill out a ZAP for the following reasons:

·         Student does not have assignment on the day it is due

·         The assignment is not complete

·         The assignment is not legible

·         The assignment has not been completed correctly

2.     Students should follow the following ZAP procedures:

·         ZAPs are always served on the day after you receive them.

·         When you receive a ZAP you are to fill out the form completely.  You are then to keep only the white copy.  This goes home with you for a parent signature.  The yellow and pink copies must both be turned in to the teacher in whose class you received the ZAP.  Do not take all copies home.

·         On the assigned ZAP day if you have your work and your signed form you may simply turn both in to one of the ZAP teachers at any time before going to lunch. Do not turn the work in to the assigning teacher.  All ZAP work and forms must be turned in to one of the ZAP teachers.  Students will be given the names of the teachers in charge of ZAP.  First lunch ZAP will be located in room 2 and second lunch ZAP will be located in room 4 .

·         If you are required to serve a ZAP you will be released five minutes early so that you may go to the cafeteria to get your lunch.  It is your responsibility as a student to make sure your teacher is aware that you need to be dismissed to get lunch for ZAP.  For first lunch ZAP this means the last five minutes of third period.  For second lunch ZAP this means the last five minutes of fourth period.

·         If you do not have your work completely done or if you forgot to get your form signed by a parent you will need to go to your assigned room to serve ZAP.  If you have your signed form and you complete your assignment while in ZAP that day you will be dismissed at the end of the ZAP lunch period.  You will not need to return to ZAP the following day.  If your form is not signed by a parent and/or you did not complete your work during ZAP you will need to serve ZAP a second day in order to return your form and/or work.  YOU CANNOT BE DISMISSED EARLY THE SECOND OR THIRD DAY OF ZAP.  IF YOU DID NOT CLEAR THE FIRST DAY YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO SERVE ZAP THE SECOND OR THIRD DAY.

·         Remember to bring all necessary supplies and work to ZAP.  It is your responsibility to make sure you have the assignment and any other materials needed for completion.  You may not go interrupt teachers to ask for a second copy of an assignment during ZAP.  If you leave necessary materials in your locker you will be required to use an S.O.S. pass to go retrieve them.

·         Some assignments cannot be completed in one lunch period.  Your best choice is to complete your late work the night before ZAP.  If you work on your assignment but do not complete it by the end of the ZAP lunch period you will be required to serve a second or third day with a ten point deduction each day the assignment is late.  If after serving three days of ZAP you still do not turn in any work the assignment will receive a zero.

·         Students who receive twenty ZAPs will no longer serve ZAP.  This means that the same point deductions apply, but without the safety net of ZAP.  Students should be very aware of how many days have passed since they missed the due date of an assignment and that any assignment not turned in after three days will receive a zero.  Many teachers will still notify parents of late work, or require students to call and notify parents that an assignment has not been turned in.

·         Any signature that does not appear valid will be checked with parent contact by phone.

Remember that the goal of ZAP is to insure that you do not receive a zero on any assignment as well as to make sure parents are aware that you are struggling to get you assignments turned in correctly or on time.  Parents and teachers will work together to help you be successful and get assignments done on time and to the best of your ability.  If you feel you need help please attend the tutorials offered by your teachers.  ZAP is not the place for tutorial assistance on your assignments as the ZAP teacher in charge may not have the expertise of the assigning teacher.
